Commitment #29

“I will invest in digital media.”

There are so many ways you can get your hands on media without having to worry about the social and environmental costs of your actions. Purchasing e-books, movies and music is a form of instant gratification. Files download to your computer or device while you skip a trip to the store and bypass the massive harvesting of resources that go into making and transporting the hardcopy. By the time you sit down to read, watch or listen, you can do so without feeling guilty about the polluting by-products and, when the experience is over, there’s no worries about dealing with a book, DVD or CD now that you’re through.

Personally speaking, I am addicted to audiobooks. I’m convinced I retain a higher percentage of information by listening instead of reading and the practice increases my productivity by allowing me to “read” and be active at the same time. Other digital media forms I enjoy are podcasts, blogs, e-magazines and news websites. Granted, to make use of most digital forms of media you need a computer or iPod like device, but if you are reading this you are already hooked up. Also, don’t forget rental memberships like Netfilx (which I’m also addicted to) that let you stream content live.

And pretty soon you’ll be addicted to Facebook too! But hopefully that won’t take away from the real social aspect of actually seeing you. 🙂
